Following the success of The Ruling Class starring Peter O' Toole in 1972, Medak was hailed as one of the great directors of his time. Courted by Peter Sellers in 1973, he agreed to direct his pirate comedy in Cyprus but no sooner as shooting began, Sellers lost confidence in the movie and set about sabotaging his own film. The production descended into 67 days of nightmare resulting in Columbia refusing to release the film, derailing Medak's career.

After 43 years the wounds have barely healed for Medak and The Ghost of Peter Sellers was his opportunity to tell the tale and finally release the weight associated with its failure.
